Slovenia day 7 task 6
With a great forecast but with strongish winds at 3000m, a 65km ish task was set up and down the valley as usual but with three tricky turnpoints at the Tolmin end to catch out the unwary. I had a good start and made it down to Tolmin pretty easily. I got high on the…

Now that’s what I call a low save :-)
Day 7 task 6. More to come but I thought I’d share this GE image of my low save at Tolmin! It so nearly went horribly wrong! Off to the presentation party now – I’m hoping I’ve clung onto 3rd in the Sports class…!

Slovenia day 6 task 5
In the red Renault bus again… I’ve definitely found my calling in life – climbing onto the roof-rack to load 14 gliders on top! We still had a forecast for strong winds at 3000m, so that restricted the options a bit, however a good long 73km task was set taking in the usual run down…

Now that’s what I call a thermal :-)
Day 6, task 5. There’s more to follow but this was my climb of the week having got the penultimate turnpoint to the left of the image. From here it was a 14km glide to goal via the last turnpoint.

Slovenia day 5 task 4
YARR. (Yet Another Ridge Run). Well, that’s a bit unkind but it does feel like that. The winds at 3000m were forecast to be 40km/h so the task committee set a 58km task up and down the Kobarid / Tolmin valley. The sky initially had lots of high cloud cover but it cleared shortly after…

Slovenia day 4 task 3
A 54km race to goal was eventually set at about 1530 due to quite strong winds on take off, low cloudbase and biggish clouds nearby. The window opened at 1545 with the race start at 1630. This gave us plenty of time to get a good position for the start within the 3km start in/exit…

Slovenia day 3 task 3 – cancelled
Not such a great forecast today – 5-6/8ths cloud plus 50% chance of thunderstorms. Still, we went up to launch where it was grey and colder than usual and a task was set – a 64km race to goal, then it was changed to a 41km elapsed time task, then finally cancelled altogether. We ended…

Slovenia day 2 task 2
With the forecast for possible thunderstorms in the afternoon the task committee set a shorter fast course – 56km, from the same takeoff at Stol. The 140 gliders milling around the start cylinder going round in a few large but gentle thermals was a surreal experience. I hope someone has some video footage of it…

Slovenia day 1 task 1
After a great practice day on Saturday (76km task up and down and back up the valley again) we were all set for the first task. The forecast was good and conditions looked nice with cloudbase forecast to be 1800m rising to 2000m. A 68km task was set with the start at 1330. Loitering around…
