Summer seems like a long time ago…
Gosh, the clocks are about to go back, and summer seems like a very long time ago now. I’ve had a couple of nice flights since getting back from Ager in early September – a short XC on my solo glider, and a great day taking some friends of mine tandeming at Pandy, but that’s…

Ager Task 3
This was the classic 80km task to Berga, and wow, was it ever spectacular! Convergence in the valley before the start gave us a lovely relaxed start flying around the clouds, and then once the race was on we headed east over the first gorge at the end of the Ager ridge (where I got…

Ager Tasks 1 & 2
After much deliberation the task setting committee finally chose a 88km cat’s cradle task around the valley in light of the fact that there were some interesting looking lenticulars over the hills to the north. Race start was at 1350 and I was off at 1300, heading east along the ridge where I found a…

It’s official, the drought is over :-)
Yep, that’s right, only a week after bemoaning the lack of a big flight since May I can now report that the drought is officially over having flown 152kms to goal on Tuesday 29th July. From a few days out the forecast was looking good for a flight from Selsley or Frocester, and for once…

A summer drought?
I’m not referring to a flying drought as I’ve had plenty of flying and airtime, it’s the dearth of 100km+ flights that’s befallen me since May. I managed four 100km+ flights in April and May, but since then I’ve flown 19km, 24km, 41km, 49km and 65km. I also had a wonderful 38km out and return coastal flight…

Sigma 9 review after 30 hours
I’ve now had about 30 hours on my Sigma 9 29 (all up 112kg + 5kg ballast for the comp) in a mix of boisterous mountain air (Grindelwald and Gemona mountains), smooth air (Gemona flatlands), and weak thermals (above Interlaken) so feel I’m ready to post my thoughts. I think the main thing I’ve come…

A weekend in Advanceland!
Last weekend I headed out to Advance’s HQ in Thun for the XC Serial Team Meeting where all the team pilots got to meet each other and the guys at Advance, and most importantly, to pick up our new Sigma 9s. After we’d done the formalities we headed out to Grindelwald and took the gondola…

It’s a game of two halves…
Thursday The May Day Bank Holiday weekend of 2nd-5th May had been pencilled in for the annual North South Cup for some months, and the plan was, weather permitting, for the gathering to be held in Scotland. The forecast for Friday and Saturday was looking good some days ahead, but Sunday and Monday weren’t looking…

Three days, four flights…
I know it’s hard for some of my foreign readers to believe, but it doesn’t always rain in the UK, and when it’s not, it can be very very good for XC flying. The week before Easter was such a week – on Sunday 13th April lots of people flew big distances from Frocester, a…
